The Red Scrolls of Magic

Author: Cassandra Clare

Blurb:

All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation.

A lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the shadowhunter who, against all odds, is finally his boyfriend. It doesn't seem like too much for the centuries-old High Warlock to ask for. But no sooner have they settled in Paris than an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is causing chaos around the world. A coult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke. Now demons are dogging their every step as Magnus and Alec race acros Europe to track doen the Crimson Hand before they can unleash a powerful force of evil upon this world.

Alec and Magnus are enjoying a vacation in Paris, when suddenly Magnus Bane is  accused of controlling an evil cult called the Crimson Hand. It is true that he formed the cult, but Magnus originally formed the cult as a joke; the people in the cult just played pranks and helped the sick, now the cult has a new leader, whose identity is a mystery, not to mention that for some reason, Magnus cannot remember what happened during the three years he had the cult. The Clave is very suspicious of this, and they are investigating Magnus.

In the Shadowhunter Market, Alec encounters a warlock, who also want revenge on the Crimson Hand for something they did. From Paris the trio take the Train to Venice, where they crash a party, then race to Rome, where a shocking discovery is made. Magnus’s father is revealed, new friendships are made, and a certain evil may be released if Alec and Magnus cannot stop it.

This book was a very fun and interesting read. Magnus and Alec bring us back into the world of Shadowhunters with a new fantasy adventure set in Europe. The setting of the book is fabulous. Paris. What a romantic place for a vacation. A party in Venice, and a rendezvous in Rome. The perfect places for a dreamy expedition. I liked how they found out more about each other and grew closer. Later in the book they also meet some other Shadowhunters, and their encounters with each other are very, interesting.

Review:

Overall I rate this book a 8.5/10. It had a good plot and all, but some parts were not up to my expectations. The ending was very predictable, and although I enjoyed Alec and Magnus visiting Europe, it was not very original.
